City Win Totesport.com Cup

Posted on: Fri 13 Aug 2010

Leicester City's second string have won the club's first, but hopefully not last, silverware of the season with a 2-1 win over Oldham Athletic reserves at Quorn FC.

A brace from striker Ashley Chambers proved good enough for City as two well taken goals cancelled out Chris Taylor's second half equaliser.

But City's victory may have been marred by an injury to Portuguese defender Miguel Vitor. Vitor lasted only thirteen minutes of his comeback from a quad injury before being forced off and replaced by Liam Moore.

There was good news for watching manager Paulo Sousa though as both Michael Lamey and Bruno Berner played 45 minutes, and looked good in the Foxes' backline.

Leicester should have been in front within ten minutes, but after good work on the right hand side Chambers blazed over the bar inside the six yard box.

At the other end Oldham broke down the left but Andy Crompton couldn't control his shot and he sliced his effort wide of Robert Ambrusics' post.

City then took the lead, after a good combination of power and precision by Chambers. Firstly he muscled Rod McDonald off the ball before slotting past Ollerenshaw in the Athletic goal.

The hosts controlled the majority of the first half, without creating too much in the way of goalmouth action. But Nathan Hicks couldn't find a target in the penalty area with an inviting low cross.

At half time Chris Powell introduced youngsters Luke O'Neill and George Taft in the full back positions in place of Lamey and Berner who may well feature for the first team against Middlesbrough on Saturday.

In the second half City continued to control possession, and Verma had a long range shot that went just over, and Craig King forced the Oldham goalkeeper into a good save.

Just after the hour Oldham were level via a set piece. A left wing corner was headed back across goal by Sean Gregan and turned home by Athletic number nine Chris Taylor.

But City were soon back in front via a delightful passing move. Craig King and Jorrin John combined to find Ashley Chambers who found the roof of the net.

In the final stages City looked full of energy with Jorrin John the pick of the Foxes' youngsters. John and Taft linked up particularly well on the left hand side, and John was almost played in one-on-one before a saving clearance from Worthington.

At the other end Robert Ambrusics was largely untroubled in the Leicester goal, and City were soon crowned Totesport.com cup winners

City: Ambrusics, Lamey (O'Neill, 46), Vitor (Moore, 13), Parkes (c), Berner (Taft, 46), Milnes, Hicks, John, Verma, Chambers, C. King
