City striker, Ashley Chambers, hopes to take advantage of new manager Paulo Sousa's 'clean slate' to stake his claim for first-team consideration.
He blasted home both goals as the Reserves won the Totesport.com Cup 2-1 against Oldham at Quorn and Sousa, looking on, could not fail to be impressed, which is all Chambers was wanting to do.
He said: "The door is open. That's how I took it when I heard the news of him taking over."
"Everyone has a clean slate and it is a question of just showing him what you can do. I just went out there trying to impress and scored two goals so I am delighted with that."
With Matty Fryatt, Steve Howard and DJ Campbell in good form already, Chambers realises he has a challenge to break through into that company.
He added: "There is a little bit of a chance. They are experienced guys and I am just the new kid on the block, trying to show what I can do with my youth and exuberance and see if I can get in around it."
With no regular second-string football, it is a tough task: "That's the thing. After sixty minutes I found myself cramping up but all you can do is try to keep yourself fit in case you get a chance in the first-team."
