Pearson Delighted With Professional Win

Posted on: Sun 29 Jan 2012

Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson pointed to the professional approach of his players as they staved off a brave effort from Swindon Town, beating the Wiltshire side 2-0.

Goals from Jermaine Beckford in each half ensured that the Foxes were in Sunday's 5th round draw of the FA Cup with Budweiser.

Speaking to the media post-match, Pearson said: "It was a good game and I was pleased with the way we dealt with the challenge posed by Swindon Town in a professional manner.

"They were in somewhat of a win-win position today. The pressure was on us to perform and to get through to the next round. We did just that and from my perspective I felt that it was a comfortable win.

"Swindon played some good football though today, and they had a great following, which helped to create a good atmosphere. Perhaps the early goal helped to set the tone of the game, but they were very strong towards the end of the first-half."

The City boss gave a first-team debut to Academy striker Tom Hopper and reserved some words of praise for the young forward.

"He did well when he came on and we are pleased for him. Often with injuries and circumstances ruling other players out, it offers opportunities for young players to get a game.

"Tom trained with us yesterday (Friday) and he didn't look out of place at all. It will have been a good experience for him to be involved and hopefully he will take a lot from today."

Looking forward to Wednesday night's return to npower Championship action, Pearson was quick to guard against complacency as his charges come up against one of his former clubs, Middlesbrough at King Power Stadium.

"They are a good side and will be well organised and hard to beat. We have a couple of players in Danny (Drinkwater) and Nathan (Delfouneso) who come back in to contention now, so that is another positive. We'll assess the group over the coming days and make sure we are ready for what promises to be good game.

"We are keen to keep the momentum going and build upon the good recent form. It is hard to put your finger exactly on what has changed, but the players must take the credit for the upturn in form. Hopefully we can keep the winning mentality going and get the points on Wednesday."
