Matty Fryatt's second goal in successive games gave Leicester City another home win against Barnsley at the Walkers Stadium this afternoon.
The scoreline could have been more convincing but again City stood firm in the face of a battling visiting side.
City's latest signing Paul Gallagher was handed his debut after his arrival from Blackburn Rovers yesterday, up front with Matty Fryatt in place of the injured Steve Howard.
Lloyd Dyer returned on the left for Nicky Adams as the only other change in the Foxes line-up from the side who did so well in the 1-1 draw against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane in midweek.
There was also a warm reception for ex-City favourite Iain Hume who had fully recovered from last season's horrendous head injury and was leading the Tykes attack.
City started very positively and Dany N'Guessan was fouled on the right for a free-kick by Matt Oakley which was cleared. Next, after a fine move with Gallagher feeding Dyer, Neilson's header from the cross was saved.
Both sides then exchanged long-range efforts off target before a Hume free-kick into the area was well cleared by Jack Hobbs before City threatened again with a Dyer cross from the left inches away from the head of N'Guessan, then Dyer burst through two challenges to steer a shot a fraction wide of the far post.
Two chances at either end could then have tipped the balance, a super shot from Martin devaney being well saved at full stretch by Chris Weale and moments later Wellens sent Fryatt in but Luke Steele was equal to the task.
In the last minute of the half, a Neilson cross sent Fryatt in on the right and his effort was saved to keep the soreline blank at the break.
City came out for the second half fired up, gaining two corners in quick succession and the pressure was soon rewarded with the opener in the 53rd minute, a brilliant through pass from Wellens sending Fryatt in for a clinical finish.
The home side almost made it two when, from a cross from the right, a Hobbs header hit the side netting on the far side, before Barnsley swept upfield and almost forced a way through, but the City defence held firm.
But they were soon stretched when a good run by Jamal Campbell-Ryce ended with the low cross inches away from being turned in by Gray.
City then really turned it on, Wellens sending Gallagher in for a superb shot on the turn tipped over, an N'Guessan cross was then not held but only just scrambled away before an N'Guessan shot was tipped onto the bar.
But City could not relax in the closing stages as a shot by Campbell-Ryce was blocked in the nick of time.
