Leicester City are through to the third round of the Carling Cup after coming from behind to beat Leeds United 2-1 at Elland Road.

Steve Howard again saw off United with a dramatic late goal, this time a penalty to help Paulo Sousa's side advance in Yorkshire.

Davide Somma had given Leeds a first half advantage before Richie Wellens equalised, and Howard gave the Foxes' a place in the last 32.

City made five changes from the side that started the 3-0 defeat to Burnley on Saturday, one of which was enforced with Conrad Logan coming in for the injured Chris Weale.

The other four switches from Turf Moor saw Michael Morrison, Paul Gallagher, Michael Lamey and Franck Moussa replace Matt Oakley, Andy King, DJ Campbell and Robbie Neilson. Fryatt and Dyer were still missing through injury.

Of the four changes made by Leeds, two were significant for City fans, as former Foxes'Max Gradel and defender Alex Bruce came into the starting line-up for Simon Grayson's side.

It was Gradel who looked the brightest in the opening stages, seven minutes in his teasing right wing cross just evaded the onrushing Luciano Becchio.

For a while after both sides were restricted to half chances, Dany N'Guessan's shot was fierce but straight at Shane Higgs who tipped over. Then Davide Somma showed neat skill to chip over Hobbs before Moreno's covering challenge saved City.

Alex Bruce could've given Leeds the lead against his former club, but unmarked from a Neil Kilkenny corner the Irishman headed well wide of the target.

Just before the half hour Paul Gallagher almost marked his return to the team with an assist. His deft left wing cross missed both Howard and Hobbs inside the six yard box.
Soon after Leeds were in front and it was Gradel who provided a telling contribution to the opener. Connolly found the former City man and his cross was smartly headed in by Davide Somma, his third goal in two games.

Leeds controlled the affair from then until half time, and Conrad Logan was called into action to stop the hosts from doubling their advantage. Bradley Johnson marauded forward from left back and his fizzing effort was helped over for a corner by Logan.

Leicester had one last chance to level before the break but Steve Howard's free header from a Bruno Berner cross went well wide.

At half time Andy King came on to replace Moreno and the Welsh international was involved immediately. Gradel broke again down the right and his shot was blocked into the path of Becchio. The Argentinean's effort was scrambled off the line by King as City survived.

Eight minutes into the second half Paul Gallagher threatened from distance. His low long range effort was awkward and saved at the second attempt by Higgs.
Mid-way through the second half City were level, as their trio of central midfielders combined to maximum effect. N'Guessan's cross looped up in the air, and then Moussa and King both showed smart touches to lay in Wellens who scored his second Carling Cup goal of the season.

Leicester almost took the lead with nineteen minutes to go, the suddenly inspired Gallagher's low cross was diverted goalwards by Howard and it took a sharp reaction save by Higgs to deny him.

Leeds again threatened from the right wing as Gradel's deep was superbly headed away from danger by Michael Morrison with Somma just behind him.

At the other end from a right wing corner, Jack Hobbs got good purchase on a header but his effort went straight at Shane Higgs.

Somma again threatened for Leeds as the game entered the last ten minutes, a mazy run across the edge of the penalty area ended with the South African born striker firing just wide.

With three minutes to play City were awarded a penalty when Neill Collins handled a long pass into the area. Steve Howard stepped up to take it and sent Higgs the wrong way to give City a late lead.

A couple of late corners from Leeds sent hearts fluttering in the away end. But Logan commanded his penalty area and City advanced.
