Berner's contract at Blackburn Rovers expired at the end of the 2007/08 season and he signed up with the Foxes until the end of the 2011 campaign on Monday, September 11 2008.

Berner has amassed a total of 16 caps for Switzerland to date and became manager Nigel Pearson's tenth capture since he arrived at the club.

Pearson said: "Bruno showed a real desire to join us. He's a player with a wealth of experience and I am sure he will be a great addition to our squad."

Chairman Milan Mandaric added: "Bruno had options to play at a higher level, but he can see what is happening here. He's a player of great calibre and it is fantastic to have him on board."

He made four appearances for Rovers last season - his final start for the club coming in their 2-0 defeat at the hands of Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in February.

Berner has also represented Grasshopper Zurich, SC Freiburg and FC Basel during his playing career.

He made his Leicester debut in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy win over Lincoln City in September, 2008 and has gone on to prove himself to be a versatile player with solid displays in defence and midfield.
