Brendan Rodgers has reinforced the message behind an upcoming boycott of social media across English football in response to ongoing and sustained discriminatory abuse online.
- Leicester City will join a social media boycott between Friday and Monday this weekend- It is in response to the ongoing and sustained discriminatory abuse received online by players and many others connected to football- Manager Brendan Rodgers commented on the boycott earlier this week- It will take place while the Foxes face Southampton in the Premier League on Friday
Between 3pm on Friday and 11:59pm on Monday, Leicester City will join other clubs and stakeholders from across the men's and women's games to unite for a social media boycott.
It takes place as English football comes together to emphasise that social media companies must do more to eradicate abuse online, in light of many incidents in recent months and years where people associated with football have been subjected to discriminatory behaviour.
Speaking ahead of Friday's Premier League fixture against Southampton, which will fall during the boycott, Rodgers said: "I’m, clearly, not on social media and I’m very thankful that I was brought up in an era where I didn’t need it.
"Of course, there’s a serious side to it, where peoples’ lives can be affected. Hopefully this show of strength, with people coming together in sport, football and in life, it shows it is something that we can’t stand for."
That unification of clubs and stakeholders can help to inspire positive change, Rodgers believes, as society adapts to modern forms of communication.
"It’s great that people can come together and enforce this and hopefully we can benefit from it," he added. "It’s there, it’s part of our life. I don’t say everything is wrong with social media. I only visually see things, see funny things, and all that side of it, which is quite good.
"But what I read and hear about abuse and that type of behaviour, of course that’s not acceptable, and there needs to be accountability for that. It’s [about] responsibility.
"There needs to be accountability and responsibility for anyone who [shows] that type of behaviour on social media. There’s many sections of it which are really positive and we’re in a world now where society is changing. Technology now is so important.
"We also have to protect people, especially the vulnerable."
