The 21-year-old centre back, who scored 12 goals in all competitions last term, has been forced to watch on from the stands as his team-mates compete for the title in Premier League 2 Division 1 this season.
For a young player of such undoubted potential, who is hoping to forge a career in the professional game, such a lengthy period away has been an immense source of frustration.
During an interview with LCFC TV this week, Hughes made no attempt to hide the fact that the past seven months have been a challenging time.
As part of the pre-match programme for Friday’s PL2 fixture against Derby County, the ex-Chester man provided an insight into his rehabilitation and expressed excitement to finally be back in contention.
Hughes Looking Forward To Foxes Return
Watch a snippet from Sam Hughes' interview with LCFC TV, which will be broadcast on Friday evening.
“I’m definitely raring to go,” he said, speaking at the Club’s training ground. “It’s been a long time, I thought I could return a few months ago but I still had a few problems in my back.
“I’m hoping and I’m praying that when I come back, everything’s going to be fine, which I’m sure it will, and it’ll be great to get a taste of the next few games coming up.”
Hughes admits to experiencing tough moments over the past seven months, days where his injury would persist just as he thought it was behind him.
In November, the 21-year-old was a second half substitute against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League Cup, but a return of his back problem resulted in another spell out.
“There’s days when you come in and you’re frustrated with just sitting in the physio room, just being in the gym, when the lads are going out training,” he added.
Obviously I want to see every single lad in that team have a successful career but you begin to think that yours is stalling a little bit.

“Obviously I want to see every single lad in that team have a successful career but you begin to think that yours is stalling a little bit.
“Especially off the basis of last season, when I played nearly every game, I didn’t have a problem during the whole season.
“You come back in pre-season and out of nowhere, you’re out for seven months.
“You’ve just got to get on with it, stay positive and know that everything’s going to be alright in the future.”
Leicester City supporters can watch Sam Hughes’ interview in full live on LCFC TV from 6:45pm GMT on Friday, ahead of the Development Squad’s clash with Derby County.
