Wright Braced For 'Massive' Bayern Tie

Callum Wright has called Wednesday’s visit of FC Bayern Munich to Holmes Park in the Premier League International Cup a ‘massive’ match for Leicester City’s Development Squad.

City host the German giants’ youngsters in Whetstone after overcoming Sparta Prague and Feyenoord to finish as one of two best-placed runners-up in the competition’s group stage.

Speaking to LCFC TV’s U23s Live programme, featuring 15 minutes of previews ahead of the 7pm GMT kick-off on Wednesday night, Wright, 18, described his team-mates' excitement for the tie.

“Everyone’s looking forward to the game,” he said, sat in the Media Suite at the Club’s Belvoir Drive training complex earlier this week, as preparations for the clash continues.

“It’s the knockout stage now so everyone’s getting excited and it’s against Bayern Munich as well, which is a big club, so the excitement’s there in the changing room.

“This competition is massive for us because we’re playing against foreign clubs, which is a different test to playing English teams.

Wright: Everyone's Excited To Face Bayern

In a preview of Wednesday's LCFC TV broadcast of the Development Squad's tie against FC Bayern Munich, Callum Wright speaks about the clash.

“It’ll be tough, it’ll definitely be tough, they’re obviously the top club in Germany, they’ll have all the best kids over there [and] I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve brought kids in as well.

“We’re looking forward to it. This is obviously what we want to do, we want to win a trophy, or get as far as we can in the trophies.

“We want people to remember this season as something positive, so it’ll be great if we can get through and keep pushing on in the tournament now.”

Despite the enthusiasm within the Under-23s group this week, their form in recent weeks has been a source of frustration and Wright says everyone in the squad is desperate to improve it.

It’s good for us when the crowd can come (to Holmes Park), it’s just preparation for you if you do push on into the first team. It’s a bit more pressure on us, but that’s good for us.

He added: “We’ve been playing okay to be fair, we’re just a bit naïve right now so we’re struggling to get the results that we probably [deserve] as good as we have been playing.

“It’s massive to get a result in the next game. Obviously ahead of every game we’ve been saying ‘we need to change it round now, come on, let’s get a result.’

“We’ve had people coming back from injuries and I know what it’s like playing when you’re not fully match fit, you’re feeling a bit off the pace.

“So it’s about getting them back into the team as well. Obviously they’ve had three or four games now so we should be ready to get back with them now.”

Wright, who joined the Club from Blackburn Rovers, signing a three-and-a-half-year deal last January, also revealed how beneficial a supportive Holmes Park crowd can be for City’s youngsters.

City's youngsters have encountered a tough run of form, not winning in six matches, over recent weeks.

“It’s good for us when the crowd can come, it’s just preparation for you if you do push on into the first team,” he concluded. “It’s a bit more pressure on us, but that’s good for us.

“Obviously some of us thrive on the pressure and hopefully the whole team does and, if the crowd can get down to Holmes Park, it will be great.

“It feels like home playing there. When we get there, it feels normal, and when you get on the pitch, it’s a hard place (for the opposition) to play and you can see that in recent results.

“We’ll try and make it as difficult as we can for Bayern Munich as well.”

Live coverage begins on LCFC TV from 6:45pm GMT on Wednesday, with commentator Nick Walsh set to be joined by former Fox Sean St Ledger for the clash.
