Key Stage Two Pupils At Beaumont Lodge Primary School Get Mental Health Aware

The class was split into three or four people per group and they had to complete a number of team-based physical and mental challenges.

The idea was to build up a number of emotions, to make the young people realise how easy it is to get into difficult situations, while being prompted with how we could deal with them.

One in four people in the UK experience a mental health problem each year and, towards the end of the session, the class discussed their own difficult situations – which was the main learning outcome of the lesson.

Glenn Short, Schools Sports Officer at LCFC Community Trust discussed the workshop: ”We tried to get the children to feel frustration, so we could try to help them deal with it through various techniques.

“It is SATS week as well, so the Year 6s got to experience that high-pressure environment – the challenges have helped them understand that range of emotions.

“Experiencing those emotions help you deal with things in different ways, so it is good for support and later life preparation.”

Meanwhile, Hafsah, a Year 5 pupil at Beaumont Lodge reflected on the challenges: “I did find it a little bit hard.

“We had to complete challenges all together and find different ways to complete it.

“It was good to write it down about how we felt.”
