The young Foxes defeated Singapore Cricket Club and English counterparts Aston Villa, while also drawing with local outfit Kitchee, to seal top spot in Group B with seven points.

Petty, who alongside Steve Beaglehole, is overseeing the squad in Hong Kong this summer, was proud of the standard of performance he witnessed in challenging conditions.

The temperature exceeded 30 degrees in the Happy Valley district as City faced Kitchee in the middle of the day – which will stand them in good stead on Sunday, Petty says.

Watch all the goals and reaction from Hong Kong after Leicester City booked their place in the HKFC Citi Soccer Sevens Main Cup quarter-finals.

Speaking to LCFC TV at the end of the day, Petty said: “I’m absolutely delighted!

“There was something on that game against Villa, for sure, and to knock a team like them out is a massive plus as well.

“There was a bit of tension out there. I think that will put us in good stead for the rest of the competition.

Going 1-0 up and then letting Kitchee get back into it, but over all the three games, I think we’ve been really good.

“I think you’ve got to be really flexible and I think that’s what we’ve tried to do this year. We’ve tried to have a couple of plans up our sleeve.

“So far, so good, but tomorrow’s a different day, but that game there was more like a knockout game. Hopefully that experience will do us good tomorrow (Sunday).”

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s performances caught the eye in particular with the Club’s Soccer Sevens captain scoring twice and delivering two assists on the opening day.

“He’s been brilliant,” Petty continued. “I think the lads have performed admirably. In the second game, we showed a bit of naivety to be honest…
