Earlier this summer, the Desert Foxes beat Senegal, Kenya and Tanzania in Group C to book a round of 16 clash with Guinea at 30 June Stadium in Cairo.

Slimani netted for his country during the latter of those successes, a 3-0 win over Tanzania, increasing his tally to 27 goals in 61 games for Algeria.

While the City striker, on loan at Fenerbahçe last term, did not feature against Guinea, goals from Mohamed Youcef Belaïli, former Fox Riyad Mahrez and Adam Ounas sealed the win.

Following this latest victory, Algeria are scheduled to tackle either Mali or Ivory Coast in the last-eight stage, who face each other on Monday night (5pm BST kick-off).

Earlier, on Saturday, meanwhile, Foxes midfielder Wilfred Ndidi’s Nigeria defeated current champions Cameroon to qualify for the quarter-finals.

The Super Eagles will now play South Africa, following their shock win over hosts Egypt, in the quarter-finals in Cairo on Wednesday 10 July (8pm BST kick-off).
