Albrighton: A Test Against Unknown Opposition

Marc Albrighton believes Leicester City fared well against an unknown quantity during their 2-1 victory over Cheltenham Town on Saturday.

The Foxes fell behind early on, when Luke Varney headed in to put the hosts 1-0 up at Jonny-Rocks Stadium.

After the interval, though, City responded well and were on level terms thanks to Jamie Vardy’s neat finish before Albrighton struck the winner with 15 minutes to play.

Albrighton told LCFC TV: “These games are always tough, tough exercises. You’re coming up against opposition that you don’t normally come up against. They were in a low block of five, so it was a good test for us to see how we coped against that formation.

“I think in the second half especially, we knocked the ball around a lot faster and that’s how we got through in the end.

Albrighton Feeling Good

Midfielder Marc Albrighton feels he and his teammates are in good shape at this stage of pre-season.

“Obviously, the pitch was quite slow so when they are playing in a low block, it’s always difficult to pass the ball fast on such a slow pitch.

“We did that at times in the second half and they’re the times that we got through. We need to do more of that and keep being aggressive and attacking.”

Off the mark in pre-season, Albrighton believes the way City carved out their second goal was representative of how manager Brendan Rodgers will want his side to play during the 2019/20 season.

“The manager’s on to us about being aggressive and penetrating through the lines and making those forward runs in between the gaps,” he added.

It’s always nice to score a goal. I don’t get too many, so when I do, they do feel good, whether it’s a pre-season friendly or a league game.

“That [second] goal epitomises everything that he wants of us, so if we can continue to do that and add that to our game, then we won’t go far wrong.

“It’s always nice to score a goal. I don’t get too many, so when I do, they do feel good, whether it’s a pre-season friendly or a league game.

“The finish took me into the knee-slide. I think the physios aren’t too happy about that, I don’t think they like the knee-slide celebration, so they’ve just had a word with me about that!

“It’s all good fun and it’s a good exercise. It’s good to get the minutes in again and to get another victory.”
