The 21-year-old Academy graduate’s superb goal came right in front of the 2,900 members of the Blue Army that made their way to south Yorkshire on Saturday.

It proved to be a memorable strike, and one that he was happy to share with the Club’s fans, who were vociferous all afternoon in Sheffield.

When asked whether he’s scored a goal of a similar quality, Barnes told LCFC TV: “Probably not, no! A few of the boys said they hadn’t seen it before, I just said: ‘I’ve been saving it for the games!’.

The Academy graduate's strike settled the result in south Yorkshire on Saturday.

"It’s great to score a goal of that calibre and the time it came as well was obviously important.

“Also, it’s great to celebrate in front of the fans, and for them to enjoy it as much as myself.”

Barnes, a second-half substitute on Saturday, credited his team-mates for the manner in which they secured their first win of the 2019/20 season.

We looked back at the first two games and we were a little bit hard done by at times, but we had to look at ourselves in a way and look at the chances that we had and make sure we’re taking them.

He added: “It’s a difficult place to come and it proved so today. We’re very happy with the three points in the end and you could see later on in the game the spirit of the team to grind it out and stick together when it was getting tough.

“We looked back at the first two games and we were a little bit hard done by at times, but we had to look at ourselves in a way and look at the chances that we had and make sure we’re taking them.

“Today we probably didn’t have as many chances as previous games, but the three points is the main thing.”
