Morgan & Tielemans Mark Black History Season In Leicester

Wes Morgan and Youri Tielemans underlined the importance of ridding football and wider society of racism at a De Montfort University event to mark Black History Season last week.

- The Foxes duo discussed the topic of racism and overcoming adversity in sporting situations
- Representatives from Leicester Tigers, Leicester Riders and Leicestershire County Cricket Club also attended the event

The latest in a series of events in De Montfort University's Black History Season saw Morgan and Tielemans join representatives of Leicester's biggest clubs to discuss racism and overcoming adversity in sport.

Alongside Leicester Tigers, Leicester Riders and Leicestershire County Cricket Club stars and staff, the Foxes duo took questions from students concerning the issues with racism which sport currently faces.

Delivered in partnership with DMUsport and DMU for Life, the Q&A session allowed Morgan and Tielemans, but also students and visitors alike, to talk openly about steps which should be made.

People are coming together to try and resolve these issues and to put a stop to racism. That’s what it’s all about. We need to keep trying. We need to keep moving in the right direction.

Reflecting on the occasion, staged in De Montfort University's TheVenue@DMU building, City captain Morgan told LCFC TV: "Obviously the issue of racism is high on the agenda at the moment.

"It’s great to have events like this where the subject and the situation, the awareness of it all, is being highlighted, so I’m glad to be a part of this and to share my experiences in talking about the topic.

"At the end of the day, we want to stamp out racism altogether and solve this issue. It’s not nice to see what’s happened and unfortunately these situations and things like this keep happening.

The two Foxes stars answered questions from the large crowd at DMU.

"People are coming together to try and resolve these issues and to put a stop to racism. That’s what it’s all about. We need to keep trying. We need to keep moving in the right direction."

Tielemans, meanwhile, believes football provides a platform for people to discuss racism and to share their experiences, but the Belgian stressed the importance of finding solutions, also in wider society.

It’s really good that everyone can speak about it, can just say what’s on their mind, and we need to have some solutions about these issues.

"Through football, we can speak about it," he said. "What’s really good is that in football, they have a lot of campaigns to try and solve this problem, especially in football and in sports in general.

"Like I said on stage, I think that in football, or in any other sports, you need to be safe and we don’t have to have these issues anymore in sports or football.

Morgan and Tielemans spoke following similar contributions by representatives from Leicester Tigers, Leicester Riders and Leicestershire County Cricket Club.

"I think that, in the first point, we need to solve these problems in football, but after that, in society as well. It’s important to point it out, to say it’s not right what’s happening.

"[That] this can happen today, in 2019, nearly 2020, still speaking about racism, after everything that’s going on, I think it’s not right, for nobody, and with these events, we can do something about it.

"It’s really good that everyone can speak about it, can just say what’s on their mind, and we need to have some solutions about these issues."
