Rodgers: Prepare For All Eventualities

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers looked ahead to Saturday's clash with Burnley during his pre-match press conference on Thursday.

"Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood up front... they’re a threat, they work tirelessly. They’ve got very good players. They play a system that isn’t complicated, but they work it very well.

"They’re very organised, they fight for every ball, so this is a test for us and another challenge. Everyone tells me these were the games the team might have suffered with over the last 18 months.

"Hopefully we showed against Newcastle (a 5-0 victory) and teams like that that the players are starting to understand the ways and how to break teams down if they sit in deep.

If you’re playing against a team that’s very compact and tight centrally, you need to open up the space wide, but you also need to have bodies on the inside, so you can break through.

"We know that when we have space, that we can also play as well, but we anticipate a really tough game. We’re at home and we love being at home and we want to play as well as we can."

The Foxes have showcased their improving ability to break through low defensive blocks already this season - and Rodgers says they are equipped to continue progressing this weekend.

City's manager added: "It’s just constant. It’s on the field. You’re looking at your positioning and what spaces you need to occupy in the game.

"It’s also about looking at the videos of how you play and the images of where the team needs to be in those certain moments.

"If you’re playing against a team that’s very compact and tight centrally, you need to open up the space wide, but you also need to have bodies on the inside, so you can break through.

"You need to have players that run off the ball and can go and break the lines to disorganise and you need to have the patience.

That’s the work, that’s the coaching, that’s the profession. We have to prepare the players for all eventualities in the game.

"The patience with the ball, the patience with the crowd, but everything, while you are being patience, it has to be at speed, so you can tire the team out.

"It might take you an hour to tire the legs of the opponent, but you need to keep the team running and then hopefully you then can make the breakthrough.

"The players are versed in what system we can do which allows us to try a different dynamic in the game.

"That’s the work, that’s the coaching, that’s the profession. We have to prepare the players for all eventualities in the game."
