Rodgers: A Really Exciting Time For Leicester City

Brendan Rodgers says the opportunity to lead Leicester City through a 'really exciting period' for the Football Club inspired his decision to sign a new five-and-a-half-year contract on Friday.

Guest starring on Matchday Minus Two, LCFC TV's flagship weekly programme, the Northern Irishman described how he has 'loved every moment' since his appointment in February.

Rodgers' Foxes deal sees him commit to a new contract with the Club until 2025 and, after winning 11 of 15 matches in the Premier League this term, his vibrant Foxes side currently sit second.

City have twice beaten their all-time biggest Premier League victories this season, are currently on an eight-match winning run in all competitions, and hold the best defensive record in the league.

Speaking in the company of LCFC TV presenter Dan Bates and former Foxes defender Gerry Taggart on Matchday Minus Two, the 46-year-old said: "The Club as a whole has been brilliant.

It’s a really exciting period, we’re moving to the new training ground and there are plans for the stadium as well over the next few years. I’ve loved every moment since I’ve been here.

"I only started in February, but everything felt great. I’m so happy to be able to be here for a long period and hopefully we can bring more success to the Club in that time."

The prospect of working with a playing squad which is laden with young, aspirational and talented footballers was central to Rodgers' decision, alongside exciting off-field developments at the Club.

Next summer, Leicester City are due to the move into a state-of-the-art new training centre in north Leicestershire which will rival the very best facilities in Europe.

There are also plans to develop King Power Stadium in future and Rodgers, the former Liverpool and Celtic manager, outlined the importance of harnessing that potential over the next five years.

Rodgers was speaking on a special episode of Matchday Minus Two, broadcast for free on LCFC TV two days before a weekend first team fixture.

"The reason for coming in was we felt it had a big potential," he continued. "Coming into that potential is the exciting part because there’s a lot more growth.

"It’s a really exciting period, we’re moving to the new training ground and there are plans for the stadium as well over the next few years. I’ve loved every moment since I’ve been here."

With Rodgers' side enjoying the Club's best-ever start to a Premier League campaign, playing expressive, attacking football, Rodgers says their 2019/20 form is built on foundations laid in the summer.

"The key for us in pre-season was to hit the ground running," Rodgers explained. "The consistency the players have has been key too.

The level of football we’ve played is great and it’s our job to inspire the supporters.

"They’ve been first class to win 11 games out of 15, and seven in a row, which isn’t easy in the Premier League.

"What we’ve tried to give the players is a sense that you have to start from scratch every day if you want to be a top player in the top team.

"You have to come in every day and never be complacent and that’s difficult for young players. That’s the job of the leader, to make sure they don’t become complacent."

Leicester currently hold the joint-best goal difference in the division, level with Manchester City, while they have also scored 35 goals - bettered only by the reigning champions and leaders Liverpool.

Leicester City's potential was the reason Rodgers joined the Club in the first place, the Northern Irishman said.

Rodgers is committed to entertaining the Club's supporters and, considering the stature of many of their opponents already this season, he's been thrilled with Leicester's attacking performances.

"It’s been fantastic," he added. "To see the level and the games that we’ve had, we’ve had some really tough games home and away and seeing how they’ve managed that is very pleasing.

"The level of football we’ve played is great and it’s our job to inspire the supporters."
