Results Reflect Our Quality, Says Fuchs

Experienced Leicester City defender Christian Fuchs believes his team-mates’ willingness to work hard for each other has allowed them to make a fine start to the 2020/21 campaign.

It’s first versus third in the Premier League on Sunday evening, when City travel to Anfield to face champions Liverpool having amassed 18 points from their first eight matches in England’s top-flight.

They have mirrored their impressive form in the UEFA Europa League, too, winning all three of their Group G fixtures ahead of next week’s decisive battle with second-placed SC Braga at the Braga Municipal Stadium.

Fuchs, however, was determined to lay emphasis on Leicester’s trip to Merseyside, which is no doubt one of the stand-out fixtures of gameweek nine.

“It sounds great, but we’re also aware that it’s early doors,” Fuchs told LCFC TV when asked about his side’s league position.

“It’s just the beginning of the season in both competitions – the Europa League and Premier League – but it’s also the way we play, the way we work hard every day on the pitch that’s a reflection of our quality.

“I think we learned from the end of last season that we need more consistency in our game, which we’ve definitely achieved.

“Okay, we also had one or two games that were not the way we wanted them, especially the home game against Aston Villa, but again, those games we learn from.

“We moved on, and we played away to Manchester City, and we turned it around right away.”

The streetwise defender has often operated as the left of three centre-backs for the Foxes this campaign, and he provided some insight into why he feels the formation they have been playing has been so successful in the opening few months of 2020/21.

That’s one of our strengths, that we can counter any team, and with the pace that we have up front, it really gives us the comfort to defend deep knowing that we can break on any opponent.

He said: “It feels really good. I think it’s also down to the way we’re playing in that system – that we really have tight lines, we work hard together defensively, but then also on the break we try to make quick transitions forward.

“That’s one of our strengths, that we can counter any team, and with the pace that we have up front, it really gives us the comfort to defend deep knowing that we can break on any opponent.

“It’s about how we work together as a team. Nobody is lazy defending; strikers are working back. Vards (Jamie Vardy) is sitting deep to condense the field to make it even harder for the opponent to break us down.

“I think that the commitment to the Club and how we want to play just shows that in the results that we achieve.”
