Flynn: We're Learning From The Best

Defender Shane Flynn credited a spirited performance from Leicester City's Development Squad after beating West Ham United Under-23s on Monday evening.
More on this story...

- Shane Flynn believes the team learnt a lot from Monday's 2-1 victory over West Ham
- Demarai Gray scored twice to help the Foxes to victory in Premier League 2
- Leicester City's Development Squad have moved up to 10th in the PL2 standings
- Playing alongside first team players can only help their own personal development, says Flynn

The 2-1 victory, courtesy of Demarai Gray's brace, came despite the 10th minute sending off of Vontae Daley-Campbell and moved the Foxes up to 10th in the Premier League 2 table.

Flynn believes he benefitted hugely from playing alongside senior professionals and in particular, Ricardo Pereira - who was stepping up his recovery from an ACL injury - especially after losing a player so early in the game.

"It's a great performance from the lads, we dug deep," the full-back told LCFC TV after the game. "It's unfortunate for Vontae [Daley Campbell], I didn't actually see it as I was running backwards, but we did well.

"I felt sorry for Tan (Thanawat Suengchitthawon) because obviously it's just one of them where you have to make a change to bring Darragh [O'Connor] on, who I thought helped solidify the back four with a professional performance.

Extended highlights as Leicester City's Development Squad secured a 2-1 triumph over West Ham United in Premier League 2.

"Having the likes of Ricky (Ricardo Pereira), Demarai [Gray] and Slim (Islam Slimani) in there to help us out was brilliant. The info Demarai was passing on to me, just simple bits, it's a great experience, little nuggets to take into future games as well.

"It's something you dream of doing, playing with these lads, be it them coming back from injury and playing in the Under-23s or at a higher level, hopefully to play in the first team, just any sort of experience you get.

"Ricky, he played in the World Cup two years ago and is a full-back like myself. So to just take any information, before the game he was just telling me different things to be doing when the ball is in possession of ourselves, or if they had possession of the ball.

"They're just an all around help, they've played at the top level for years now, all three of them. They give great information as well. It's not just vague stuff, it's detailed and they say it in such an easy way that you can understand pretty simply."

City's slender half-time advantage was swiped out just after the hour mark when Jakub Stolarczyk was adjudged to have brought down Daniel Chesters in the box and Oladapo Afolayan subsequently levelled up the scores from the penalty spot.

We were under the cosh in the second half, that was always going to happen. You know whenever teams go down to 10 men at any stage there's going to be periods of the game where you have the ball.

Flynn felt Leicester were always in control of the game after the equaliser, despite the visitors' numerical advantage.

"We were under the cosh in the second half, that was always going to happen," the 19-year-old admitted. "You know whenever teams go down to 10 men at any stage there's going to be periods of the game where you have the ball.

"But there are also going to be large spells where you're without the ball and you're just trying to soak up pressure, which I think we did well to an extent. I'm a bit disappointed with the penalty but I think we managed ourselves well afterwards. We didn't go into our shell, we didn't fade out of the game and let them take over.

"Yes, they had a couple of chances but I think the midfield, they stood strong in there especially, because at times we were playing with a man less in there.

"Then a great ball into Demarai to put away his second of the game to obviously get the winner is brilliant. I think he was very composed, especially the first, he's got a bit of time so he had to steady himself well and just slotted it in.

A Great Experience, Says Flynn

Shane Flynn speaks to LCFC TV after starring in the Development Squad's 2-1 win over West Ham on Monday night.

"The second one, to him it's probably not a lot of pressure, but for someone maybe of our age group, they might not be as composed as him. He did well, two excellent finishes.

"I was a bit annoyed with my own when I managed to find myself that far up the pitch and [it was] cleared off the line, but I'll take that and learn from what he's doing and if I find myself in that situation again, hopefully put it in the back of the net."

The Irish youngster also looked ahead to next week's clash with Tottenham Hotspur Under-23s at Hotspur Way on Monday 30 November, when the Foxes will be aiming for a third consecutive league victory.

Flynn added: "I think there's four or five games still to go before Christmas, so a big busy period and games to look forward to, we're in good form.

"We went through that tough spell at the back end of September, the whole month of September really, so now it's good to see the fruits of our labour coming out.

"We're winning games again, taking good form into this busy paid and hopefully pick up more points."
