The Lowdown: Sheffield United

Leicester City's next Premier League outing sees them tackle Sheffield United at King Power Stadium on Sunday (2pm kick-off).

The Foxes, who have already defeated the Blades this season, will be looking to make it back-to-back wins in the Premier League at the weekend.

LCFC.com takes a detailed look at the Yorkshire outfit, who are in their second season as a top-flight club, following promotion in 2018/19.

Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale joined the Yorkshire club in the summer.

With the help of smart signings and a talented core of existing players, the Blades surpassed all expectations during their first season back in the Premier League since 2007 last term.

In the summer, United broke their transfer record once again to sign Liverpool winger Rhian Brewster, 20, for a reported £23M, upsurging the £22M apparently spent on Sander Berge a year earlier.

Transfer fees were also spent on AFC Bournemouth shot-stopper Aaron Ramsdale, West Bromwich Albion winger Oliver Burke and Malian midfield Ismalia Coulibaly.

There was a double swoop of Derby County full-backs Max Lowe and Jayden Bogle after the pair impressed in the Sky Bet Championship too. Completing the incomings was the loan signing of Chelsea's Ethan Ampadu, while Wes Foderingham joined on a free transfer after leaving Rangers.

The Blades have only scored 16 league goals so far this season, with seven from David McGoldrick, five from Billy Sharp and three from Bogle. Ramsdale is the player to have featured most often for the Blades this term, appearing on 31 occasions in all competitions, once more than McGoldrick.

A bright point in February came with an FA Cup victory over second-tier Bristol City.

Sheffield United head into Sunday's trip to Leicester on the back of a 2-0 home defeat by Southampton, but that reverse was preceded by the Blades' fourth league win, a 1-0 success over Aston Villa.

February, meanwhile, began with a 2-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion at Bramall Lane, but that was followed by losses to Chelsea, West Ham United, Fulham and Liverpool.

They do, however, remain in the Emirates FA Cup and will tackle Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the quarter-finals after beating Sky Bet Championship side Bristol City on 10 February.

Jamie Vardy scored a dramatic late winner for City at Bramall Lane in December.

Earlier this season, Ayoze Pérez and Jamie Vardy found the net in a 2-1 victory for the Foxes over the Yorkshire outfit at Bramall Lane on 6 December.

City recorded another 2-1 win over the Blades at Bramall Lane in August 2019 thanks to goals from Vardy and Harvey Barnes.

Leicester also triumphed in the reverse fixture at King Power Stadium in July 2020, when Pérez and Demarai Gray were on the scoresheet for the Foxes, who are going in search of a 35th competitive victory against their opponents on Sunday.

The Blades' players and staff celebrate after confirming promotion to the Premier League at Stoke City.

Sheffield United's crowning moment came in 1898 as the club lifted the First Division title by a margin of five points over second-placed Sunderland.

However, they have also tasted success in several other competitions in English football, winning the FA Cup four times, in 1899, 1902, 1915 and 1925.

More recent achievements of note include the League 1 title success in 2016/17, and their Championship runners-up berth last season, securing a place in the Premier League.

United have also spent almost half of their 130-year existence in the top division of English football (60 seasons), only dropping into the fourth tier once, in 1982.

Their most recent stint in the Premier League, before last season, lasted just one season as Neil Warnock's men finished in 18th-place, losing out on goal difference to Wigan Athletic.

Bramall Lane has been the Blades' home ground since 1889.

Sheffield United have played their home games at Bramall Lane - an all-seater ground with a capacity of 32,609 seats - since their formation in 1889.

Remarkably, it is also the oldest major stadium in the world still to be hosting professional association football matches and it also hosted the first floodlit game in the 19th century.

A record crowd of 68,287 crammed into Bramall Lane in 1936, meanwhile, for an FA Cup Fifth Round tie between Sheffield United and Yorkshire rivals Leeds United.
