Fofana: Why I’m Learning Every Day

France Under-21s defender Wesley Fofana believes the welcoming nature of Leicester City’s squad has allowed him to develop his game at a rapid rate since his move to King Power Stadium in the summer.

The 20-year-old has spent nearly four months at the Foxes, and has already made 21 appearances in all competitions, including 14 in the Premier League, after making the move from his Saint-Étienne in October.

During that time, he has received his first international call-up for France youth, and has delivered a catalogue of displays that have defined his raw talent and footballing intelligence.

Speaking to LCFC TV ahead of Wednesday’s Premier League trip to Everton, he said: “I’m really, really happy for what I’ve done up until now.

“I’m very pleased with my performances, and very proud of not what I’ve just done, but what the team has done too, putting together a series of consistent performances.

“Now, we’ve just to carry on working hard, taking every match as it comes, and see how far we can go. For the moment, I’m really happy with the progress.

The central defender has produced some all-action displays at the heart of City's back line this term.

“Everything has gone really well. Everyone at the Club, all of the players, and everything on the pitch – it’s all gone well. I’m really happy so far.”

City possess a wealth of gifted players, including several experienced, Premier League-winning centre-backs, and Fofana says he is absorbing their extensive knowledge every time he trains and plays alongside them.

“I’m learning every day, from the players, from the manager – everybody at the Club,” he continued. “I’m learning a lot from the other centre-backs, the people who play my position, and not just about matches on the field, but off-field matters as well.

“That’s what’s great about this club, that everybody has been so nice and welcoming, and that I’ve been able to learn so much.

“I’m really happy and very proud of what this team is achieving. We’re well-placed in the league right now, so what we need to do is carry on working to get as high as we possibly can, and that’s got to be our aim from here until the end of the season.

“We go into every match to win it, we have that right mentality, and let’s hope that takes us even higher.”

We know we’re playing a very good team, but we’re absolutely determined to go there and win, and I hope that’s what will happen.

Fofana’s 15th Premier League outing could come against Everton on Wednesday, when City head to Goodison Park to face a side that too shares the ambition of finishing the 2020/21 among England’s elite outfits.

“Certainly, there’s a sense of revenge that we’ve got to take on Everton,” he said. “They came to King Power Stadium and went away with three points, so we’ve got to go into this match to set the record straight.

“We know we’re playing a very good team, but we’re absolutely determined to go there and win, and I hope that’s what will happen.

“We can learn from the errors that we made in that game (2-0 loss to Everton in December), which is that we can’t be sloppy and give away chances defensively.

“If you give away chances and make little errors in the Premier League, you know you’re going to pay dear. That’s what we’ll work on, and hopefully we won’t make the same mistakes again.”
