City Share The Points In Burnley Draw

Leicester City collected their 50th point of the 2020/21 Premier League campaign after coming from behind to draw 1-1 with Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday night.

With Harvey Barnes missing his first game through injury, manager Brendan Rodgers made three changes to the side that faced Arsenal three days ago, with Daniel Amartey, Papy Mendy and Hamza Choudhury all coming into the starting XI.

After just 35 seconds, former Leicester loanee Ben Mee nodded a free-kick over Kasper Schmeichel's crossbar as Burnley showcased their aerial prowess in the opening stages in Lancashire.

A loose pass in midfield presented the Clarets with another goalscoring opportunity on five minutes, and this time they took it, with Czech Republic forward Matěj Vydra slamming an effort into the back of the net.

Belgium midfielder Youri Tielemans appeared to be pushed to the ground in the Burnley box by Charlie Taylor on 10 minutes, however his penalty appeal was turned down and there was no VAR check.

Just two minutes later, Choudhury had a glorious chance to level matters, only to see his placed strike from close range from a beautiful Timothy Castagne cross tipped over by England stopper Nick Pope.

Two Nigeria internationals then linked up shortly after, as Wilfred Ndidi - operating at centre-back - lifted a fine pass into Kelechi Iheanacho, who took a touch before curling just inches wide of Pope's left-hand post. That combination would bear fruit later on in the game.

Denmark 'keeper Schmeichel, while under pressure, was on hand to punch away a Dwight McNeil corner before getting to the ball ahead of ex-City striker Chris Wood, while Pope got down well to a Jamie Vardy cross with Iheanacho arriving in the centre.

After Çağlar Söyüncü lost his footing at the far post, a half-volley from Wood tested Schmeichel, who did well to take the power off the effort before gathering the ball with 25 minutes gone at Turf Moor.

Then came City's equaliser. Iheanacho peeled off the shoulder of Mee and hammered a brilliant first-time volley past Pope, connecting sweetly with Ndidi's pin-point pass for his sixth goal of the season in all competitions.

Schmeichel, not long after, pulled off a superb save to stop James Tarkowski from nodding into the bottom corner, clawing the ball away on the goal-line to prevent the centre-back from making it 2-1 with under 10 minutes of the first half to play.

Both goalkeepers had to be alert as the game approached half-time, with Tielemans next seeing an attempt flicked over by the glove of Pope, before Schmeichel collected Taylor's 30-yard drive in first half stoppage time.

After the interval, Iheanacho curled high and wide of Pope's goal, and then Schmeichel pulled off a stunning stop at full stretch from Wood, who was under pressure from Amartey, to somehow deny the New Zealand frontman.

Choudhury had a strike blocked by Tarkowski and then fired over on the rebound as Leicester looked to assert their dominance in Burnley's third, while Wood's attempt deflected off Ndidi and flew narrowly wide of the mark via the fingertips of Schmeichel.

A wild effort from Matthew Lowton failed to trouble Schmeichel on 56 minutes, before Ashley Westwood struck the upright with a well-hit half-volley just after the hour mark.

City's first two substitutions of the game followed, with Wesley Fofana, making his first appearance since January, replacing Mendy and Marc Albrighton coming on in place of goalscorer Iheanacho with 23 minutes remaining.

Portugal star Ricardo Pereira looked to have put the Foxes ahead when his deflected effort appeared to be looping over Pope, but it flew over and nothing came of the resulting corner.

Tielemans then looked to be in after playing a one-two with Ricardo, however he opted for the return pass and the chance went begging, while Albrighton fired wide just moments later.

Leicester piled on the pressure while going in search of a winner, with Mee throwing his body in the way of a Castagne attempt from inside the box, before Choudhury came off as youngster Sidnei Tavares made his Premier League debut for the Football Club.

Albrighton, on 84 minutes, caught a half-volley well on the edge of the area, but it was straight down Pope's throat, and then Tielemans hit the post via a deflection as City continued to threaten in the closing stages.

Mee, in the 90th minute, stood in the way of a Vardy strike, however Rodgers' side had to settle for a point after a hard-fought draw with Sean Dyche's men.

Kelechi Iheanacho

The Nigeria star scored a brilliant volley to restore parity at Turf Moor.

After the disappointment of conceding inside the opening five minutes at Turf Moor, Leicester City showed their character to come from behind to claim a Premier League point.

It was Matěj Vydra who initially put the Clarets in front, but Kelechi Iheanacho's classy finish made it 1-1, and that's how it stayed in Lancashire.

Kasper Schmeichel

Leicester's No.1 gets across his goal to make an outstanding save to deny Chris Wood.

Gerry Taggart, LCFC Radio’s co-commentator at Turf Moor, said: “I want to give it to Youri Tielemans, because I thought he was excellent and ran the show for Leicester. Obviously, you have to bring Kelechi Iheanacho into that too. I thought he did really well with his runs, and he scored a great goal. But I can’t look past Kasper Schmeichel. He’s pulled off two unbelievable saves, one of them definitely world-class."
