Wembley Hero Schmeichel's Incredible Numbers For The Foxes

As Kasper Schmeichel nears his 10-year anniversary at the Club, the Danish shot-stopper demonstrated his outstanding qualities once again to play a pivotal role in Leicester City's maiden Emirates FA Cup triumph.
More on this story...

Two magnificent saves made in the latter moments of City's showpiece against Chelsea at Wembley Stadium last month will rightly be considered just as imperative to the Club's first-ever FA Cup win as Youri Tielemans' superb winning strike in the capital.

As Leicester closed in on glory, with 13 minutes remaining, two former Foxes, N'Golo Kanté and Ben Chilwell, pierced the backline with the latter nodding a header towards the bottom corner. It was always destined to hit the post, but without a touch from Schmeichel, it may well have bounced in.

The Club's iconic No.1, a Championship and Premier League title-winner, was able to fling himself across his line and provide a delicate, but potentially crucial, touch away from danger. Then, with four minutes to go, Chelsea were piling on the pressure and it fell kindly to Mount on the edge of the box.

City's No.1 hits the deck in the delight as the full-time whistle blows at Wembley Stadium.

Reece James' cross was headed away by Wes Morgan into Mount's feet and, without a moment's thought, the England man rocketed it, first time, at goal. Schmeichel, though, was not going to let a clean sheet and silverware slip through his fingers. "Simply awesome!" roared commentator Guy Mowbray.

Another scare, with VAR intervening to save City from facing extra-time, was around the corner, but the Foxes prevailed and Schmeichel, yet again, was at the heart of it. The man to wear the armband for much of 2020/21, Schmeichel shared the trophy lift with Morgan - a fitting end to an emotional day.

Although the perfect example of Kasper's incredible, continued service to the Football Club, it doesn't tell the whole story of a wonderful 10th season in Leicester City's colours. While the memories will be cherished forever, the former Leeds United stopper's numbers are equally as impressive.

The Danish shot-stopper has not missed a Premier League fixture in over three seasons.

For the third season in a row, Schmeichel reached double figures for clean sheets in 2020/21, taking him up to 22nd in the Premier League's all-time shutout charts with 75. That's more than Mark Bosnich (74), Carlo Cudicini (64) and Neville Southall (62) and two behind former City 'keeper Ian Walker.

The names Arthur Chandler, John Sjoberg and Andy King are all heavily associated with consistency and high appearance tallies for the Foxes. Schmeichel, however, has now featured for City more than all three with 424 outings for the Club - just six shy of Steve Walsh, who spent 14 years at Filbert Street.

Graham Cross, though, leads the way with a staggering 599 appearances for the Club between 1961 and 1975.

Another trophy is added to Kasper Schmeichel's collection at Leicester City.

Even more remarkably, Schmeichel has now gone three seasons without missing a single Premier League fixture for Leicester. The last time the Danish Footballer of the Year missed a top-flight match for the Foxes was a stalemate with Southampton on 19 April, 2018 - 1,152 days ago.

Capped 66 times for Denmark, no player has made more international appearances while a Leicester City player either and, despite such a gruelling campaign which included 48 outings in all competitions, the 34-year-old will continue to adorn his country's No.1 shirt throughout UEFA EURO 2020 this summer.

As Schmeichel heads into his second decade as a Fox, it's clear that he remains just as crucial as he ever has been at King Power Stadium.
