City Centre Urban Sports Celebrated With Baroness Visit

- Urban Foxes is an urban sport offer for young people aged between eight and 18
- The visit was part of the promotion for the UK Government’s Rediscover Summer campaign

Secretary of State at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Baroness Diana Barran MBE, paid visit to a Leicester City in the Community event as the UK Government encourages families to Rediscover Summer.
The event, showcasing Leicester City in the Community’s Urban Foxes programme, took place at a pop-up skatepark at The Circle, New Walk Place.
With skateboarding, parkour and BMXing available, young people aged eight to 18 can participate at Urban Foxes sessions across the region.
Speaking at the event at The Circle, Baroness Diana Barran MBE was impressed with the Urban Foxes project.
“It’s fantastic,” said the Baroness. “I think it has been fascinating to hear how Leicester City in the Community has grown and developed over the years, starting with football, and now offering a fantastic range of sports.
“[Projects like this] make lots of differences, they are huge fun, and we all need a bit of fun after the last 18 months – especially young people.
“It also tests your resilience; it pushes you a bit to your limits and it builds a load of life skills, and you see all of the kids encouraging and supporting each other.”
Rediscover Summer is a UK Government initiative encouraging families to explore new opportunities, including parkour, skateboarding and BMXing experiences.
Leicester City’s charitable arm will continue to run a pop-up skatepark at New Walk Place on 11-12 August and 18-19 August between 10am and 3pm.
Highlighting the growth of urban sports following their inclusion at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo this summer, Luke Dixon, Community Engagement Coach at Leicester City in the Community, said: “Just having these sports in the Olympics is a massive boost for the sports in general and for us as well.
“We really want to try and grow this project now and make it stand on its own two feet. The funding that we can bring in for these sorts of sports is going to bring up the project massively and it will help us in the future to sustain it.”
