Former Academy graduate József (Joey) Keaveny has joined Leicester City’s charitable arm, Leicester City in the Community, as an Inspires Mentor.

At the Club's Academy from the age of 10, Joey spent a decade playing through the age groups, rising up to the Under-23s setup, before encountering several injuries during the last few years of his time with the Foxes.

Reflecting on his youth career at Leicester City, Joey discussed the experiences that he had during his teenage years.

“I’ve got a lot of fond memories, I made a lot of good friends for life,” he said. “I had a really good relationship with all my coaches and physios. It really formed my youth.”

After spending a year in Cyprus with AEK Larnaca, Joey decided to call time on his professional football career and came back home to Leicester at the end of 2020.

As part of his work as an Inspires Mentor, Keaveny is delivering sessions to school children within the Leicestershire area.

Since returning to where he grew up, the former Academy player has joined Leicester City in the Community as an Inspires Mentor, in which he will be engaging secondary school students at The Cedars Academy and The Martin High School.

Joey will be delivering both one-to-one sessions and group sessions, aiming to help students develop a positive attitude to their education. Speaking at a session at Thomas Estley Community College, Joey talked about his new role and why he decided to join Leicester City in the Community.

“Inspires just seemed like something that really suited me,” he explained. “Helping people, being in a school environment and coming back to Leicester.

“It just felt like a very good fit for me; it felt like I was just coming back home. I hope that my journey and background can inspire them and give them something to look up to.”
