The Northern Ireland international made his return from a foot injury against Manchester City last weekend, however his first start of the season saw him substituted at half-time against Napoli.

In his pre-match press conference, Rodgers revealed it is a reoccurring foot problem for Evans, whose fitness will now be analysed prior to their fixture at AMEX Stadium.

“We just need to wait and see,” Rodgers said of Evans’ condition. “He’ll probably struggle for the weekend, I would say. He’s felt his foot again, so we’ll see medically how that looks over the next couple of days.”

Having faced the Seagulls on three occasions last season, Rodgers believes another interesting battle is on the horizon, as the Northern Irishman targets improvements in his side’s play.

West Ham and some of the fixtures we’ve had are tough, but we’ll look to be better as we go on. There’s no doubt we need to improve, and that’s something I’m very confident we’ll do throughout the season.

He added: “We had three really good games last season, in the league and the FA Cup. Graham [Potter’s] done fantastically. They have a clear identity in how they play and it should be a really, really good game.

“I think we’ve had a solid start in terms of the two good wins that we’ve had, and then the West Ham game was disappointing. [We were] down to 10 men but we weren’t at the level, and then Man City, we were competitive in the game right until very end.

“West Ham and some of the fixtures we’ve had are tough, but we’ll look to be better as we go on. There’s no doubt we need to improve, and that’s something I’m very confident we’ll do throughout the season.”
