Although City mustered up a number of goalscoring opportunities, they were unable to find the net and it was Mahir Emreli’s first-half effort that settled the game. Schmeichel felt the Foxes improved in the second period, but must be ruthless in attack if they wish to convert those chances.

“We started slow and finished better, but ultimately, it’s very disappointing,” he told LCFC TV. “We gave ourselves a mountain to climb when we conceded.

“On a difficult European night, a difficult pitch, we created enough chances I think in the second half. Unfortunately, it took until half-time to get things right.

“I think in eight out of 10 games, we’d get something out of the game with the amount of chances we created, but we lacked that little bit of cutting edge today, and we’re disappointed.”

We’ve got to do it the whole game, and that’s the most important thing. For us, it’s a case of starting quicker. We’ve got to start quicker and we have to work with that.

The Denmark goalkeeper was encouraged by City’s performance after the break, but was ultimately left frustrated after their first Group C loss.

When asked whether City can take positives from the second half, he said: “We’re going to have to, because that’s more like how we want to play, but we have to do that the whole game.

“We’ve got to do it the whole game, and that’s the most important thing. For us, it’s a case of starting quicker. We’ve got to start quicker and we have to work with that.”

Schmeichel was, however, thrilled to see several Academy stars on the pitch, including Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who made his first European start for the Club.

“It’s great to see the young lads coming through,” he added. “It’s great for them to have experiences like this, and we want to be having more nights like this.”
