A Fantastic Win For Us, Says Rodgers

The Foxes were ahead before the interval through a Youri Tielemans' penalty before Patson Daka doubled the advantage in the second half. Another strike from Tielemans, in open play, was followed by James Maddison's late effort to send City up to eighth in the Premier League

A first clean sheet in 17 matches in all competitions, meanwhile, was also a pleasing aspect for Rodgers, who spoke to LCFC TV at full-time at King Power Stadium.

"I’m absolutely delighted," the Northern Irishman said. "It was a fantastic win for us. The performance, first of all, we played very well. We had lots of young players and changes in the team, but we showed real cohesion. It was a test of our mentality today.

It shows you the collective spirit the team has, the attitude, the energy... especially coming back after a long midweek and the disappointment of losing that game.

"Our attacking game, I’ve always felt and I’ve said before, we’ve looked creative. We’ve been scoring goals and creating chances. We needed to rediscover that mentality in our defending and we were able to do that with the clean sheet."

Leicester had to respond to an early injury to Jonny Evans, with Boubakary Soumaré coming off the bench and Wilfred Ndidi dropping into defence. When added to the nature of City's schedule, which involved travelling to Italy in midweek, Rodgers was thrilled with the application of his players.

"It shows you the collective spirit the team has, the attitude, the energy... especially coming back after a long midweek and the disappointment of losing that game. We arrived back at 2:30am on the Friday and Newcastle had a full week to intensely prepare and be ready.

"For us, it was a big performance and a big result and I’m just so happy for the players that they got the rewards."

I’ve said before in a number of interviews, in our last two seasons, [our goal differences] have been +26 and +18. That tells you, really, that we’re a team that defends very, very well and that gives us a basis for our game.

The clean sheet was also welcome for Rodgers, who has now challenged his side to return to the defensive form they have exhibited over previous seasons.

"That’s the bedrock of our game," the 48-year-old added. "I’ve said before in a number of interviews, in our last two seasons, [our goal differences] have been +26 and +18. That tells you, really, that we’re a team that defends very, very well and that gives us a basis for our game.

"That’s been challenged this season because of the injuries we’ve had. If we can get those players back, it gives us that solidity, it helps us with the consistency… if we can keep our attacking verve, we’ll be okay."
