We Want To Keep Building, Says Goalscorer Barnes

The Academy graduate struck with 23 minutes of normal time remaining at King Power Stadium to take his tally to four goals in as many appearances against the Yorkshire outfit.

City had to repel the Leeds attack in stages, but ultimately emerged victorious thanks to the No.7’s eighth strike of 2021/22 in all competitions.

He told LCFC TV: “I’ve got a good record against, them, haven’t I! I don’t know what it is, whether it’s the style of play that they have, or just they’re my lucky team, but I’ve got a good record. I keep managing to score against them and long may that continue.

“We had a lot of chances throughout the game, and it kept opening up. For the goal, since Kelly (Kelechi Iheanacho) had come on, he’s so good in around the box, with little one-twos and holding it up.

Harvey Barnes vs. Leeds United

Harvey Barnes was the match-winner for Leicester City in a 1-0 success over Leeds United at King Power Stadium.

“It was just that little one-two that got me in. It was a good finish through the player’s legs and into the far post. It came at a good time for us. It was end-to-end for a lot of the game, but we couldn’t quite get that control, so to go ahead in the game was good for us.

“If I can, I want to get in behind as much as I can. Kel’s really good at bringing players into play and I can make a lot of runs of him. You know the ball is going to come.

“Around the box, he’s so good. He’s not the biggest, but he’s so strong and his touch is so good around the box, so for me, he’s really good to play with.”

The Foxes have now won three straight games across all formats, registering back-to-back clean sheets after Tuesday’s 2-0 win away to Burnley.

“Over the last month or so, performances have been where we want them to be,” Barnes said. “We’re starting to get back to getting a bit of consistency, and that’s shown in our results.

I think the first half of the season, I was getting frustrated when things weren’t quite coming off and my game wasn’t quite where I wanted it to be, but I think over the last few months, I’m starting to feel that my game is coming back.

“Back-to-back wins, Europe on Thursday, we can hopefully go and get a great result there, and for the rest of the season now we just want to keep building, get the players back fit and hopefully have a full squad going into the remainder of the season, and finish as high up as we can.”

Although Barnes is pleased with the progress he has made this term, he still feels he can contribute even further during the final three months of the campaign.

“There’s still more to come, but I’d like to think over the past few months I’m starting to get that consistency again, and that real confidence in my game,” he said.

“I think the first half of the season, I was getting frustrated when things weren’t quite coming off and my game wasn’t quite where I wanted it to be, but I think over the last few months, I’m starting to feel that my game is coming back.

“Hopefully that’s shown in games, and hopefully I can add as many goals and assists as I can to help the team for the rest of the season.”
