Links With The Past: 2021 FA Cup Final Coin

The Football Association, English football’s governing body, was founded on 26 October, 1863 when a group of men met in the Freemasons’ Tavern in Lincoln’s Inn Fields in London. Their purpose was to draw up a set of rules for the game to replace the conflicting versions that had hitherto existed.

They formulated 13 rules, the second of which dealt with kick-off, specifying that the choice of ends at the beginning of the game should be determined by the winner of the coin toss.

This tradition has been continued ever since, including at every FA Cup Final since that competition started in 1872.

The Club’s heritage collection has recently acquired the coin used at kick-off in the 2021 FA Cup Final when Leicester City famously beat Chelsea to lift the trophy for the first time.

It is a bespoke 50p piece, issued in Jersey and produced in conjunction with the Royal British Legion. It bears the image of Her Majesty The Queen on one side and a poppy with two petals on the other.

This is because the day of the fixture, 15 May, 2021, also marked the exact date of the centenary of the Royal British Legion, which was formed in the aftermath of the First World War.

The coin is in a presentation box and comes with a certificate of authenticity stating that it is the coin used at the cup final.

This distinguishes the coin from the limited edition of 5,000 identical coins which were issued for the Royal British Legion Centenary.
