Wins For Fofana, Schmeichel & Vestergaard On International Stage

Three Leicester City players starred across Monday’s international fixtures, which included victories for both Denmark and France Under-21s.
More on this story...

- City defender Wesley Fofana played in France Under-21s’ Euro qualifier victory over Armenia
- There was UEFA Nations League involvement for Kasper Schmeichel and Jannik Vestergaard
- The Foxes pair helped Denmark to a 2-1 away win against Austria to go top of Group 1

Wesley Fofana kicked off Foxes involvement as the 21-year-old central defender was named in France Under-21s’ starting XI for a comfortable 4-1 win against Armenia Under-21s at Yerevan Football Academy.

Enzo Lee Fee broke the deadlock in the first half and added his second after Amine Gouiri also found the net. Malo Gusto rounded off the scoring, with Zhirayr Shagoyan’s goal proving to be a mere consolation for the hosts.

It means Les Blues have all but confirmed qualification for the 2023 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, sitting top of Group H with one game to play. Although six points ahead of Ukraine, the second-place team still have two matches remaining. The two sides face each other on Thursday (5:45pm kick-off).

Later in the evening, City captain Kasper Schmeichel and Jannik Vestergaard both started as Denmark secured a 2-1 success over Austria at Ernst-Happel Stadion in Wien. A power cut at the stadium delayed kick-off and when it finally got underway, it was the Danes who started the better.

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg struck for the visitors, though Xaver Schlager equalised after Vestergaard was replaced on 52 minutes. However, Denmark hit back to regain the advantage with six minutes to play, courtesy of Jens Stryger Larsen’s goal and held on to the lead this time around.

The Danes now top UEFA Nations League A Group 1 with two wins from two, after also beating France last week, and take their 100 per cent record back to Copenhagen for a meeting with Croatia on Friday (7:45pm kick-off).
