Jonny Evans

Analysing Evans’ Stellar LCFC Career To Date

Today (8 June) marks exactly four years since Leicester City announced the signing of Jonny Evans in 2018.
More on this story...

Joining the Foxes from West Bromwich Albion for an undisclosed fee, the Northern Ireland international has gone on to rack up 138 appearances for the Club across all competitions.

Undoubtedly the most memorable of those games was at Wembley Stadium on 15 May, 2021. Part of one of the greatest days in the Club’s history, Evans started the FA Cup Final as Leicester City defeated Chelsea 1-0 to lift the trophy for the first time, securing the defender’s first silverware at City.

Rewinding back, Evans made his Premier League debut for the Foxes in a 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on 18 August, 2018 and quickly became a crucial member of City’s squad after making the move across the Midlands.

He brought up a half century of Leicester appearances during a 2-0 success at Brighton & Hove Albion on 23 November, 2019, one of 11 clean sheets the central defender helped to keep across the 2019/20 season.

Featuring in every league fixture that campaign - the only outfield players to do so - his calming presence was the perfect foil for the more aggressive approach from his centre-back partner Çağlar Söyüncü.

Fittingly, his 100th Premier League match for Leicester earlier last season featured a clean sheet and four goals as the Foxes swept Newcastle United aside on Filbert Way on 12 December, 2021. Evans became the 22nd City player to reach the milestone, and the oldest to do so, aged 33 years and 343 days.

Although renowned for his defensive capabilities above all else, Evans has also made notable contributions at the other end of the pitch. Scoring seven times for the Foxes, his first Premier League goal arrived against Crystal Palace on 23 February, 2019, before heading home in a 4-1 triumph at Aston Villa on 8 December, 2019.

Also finding the net in the Carabao Cup win over Everton at Goodison Park later that month, his next top-flight goal helped seal an emphatic 3-0 home victory over his former side West Bromwich Albion on 22 April, 2021.

His last two Premier League strikes have both come at St. Mary’s Stadium, scoring equalisers in draws against Southampton on 30 April, 2021 and then, in the following season, on 1 December, 2021.

A UEFA Champions League winner with Manchester United in 2008, his first European goal for the Foxes was in this season’s Europa League Group Stage, against Napoli.

The now 34-year-old signed a new contract at the end of 2020 to extend his stay with the Foxes until at least the summer of 2023 and in April 2021, the experienced defender brought up 300 Premier League appearances. Having now played 343 times, he is 82nd on the all-time Premier League list – no current City player has featured more.

Evans is still going strong for his national team too, earning a 96th Northern Ireland cap last week as he edges closer to a century of international appearances.
