Sevilla Set For Filbert Way Return On Sunday

Leicester City’s final pre-season friendly opponents Sevilla visit King Power Stadium on Sunday for the first time since 2017.

The last time Rojiblancos were in Leicester was on a night which few City fans will ever forget as goals from Wes Morgan and Marc Albrighton booked the Club's place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

Based in the capital of Andalusia in Seville, the La Liga outfit play their home fixtures at the 42,714 capacity Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium, which was named after their former long-standing club president upon its inauguration in 1958.

Claiming six UEFA Europa League titles, the Spanish giants are the most successful side in the competition’s history – a record broken courtesy of a remarkable run of three winning campaigns on the spin under former coach Unai Emery.

There’s no doubt that European specialist Emery’s three-season tenure will go down in club history but after an underwhelming 2019 La Liga campaign, a freshen-up was needed – then came Julen Lopetegui.

Under Lopetegui’s stewardship, they have never failed to finish outside the top four – a marked improvement from just one top four finish in nine seasons previous.

Last season ended with an element of frustration, winning just twice in their final 11 matches to cling on to fourth place – despite initially mounting a title charge. After visiting Filbert Way, Lopetegui’s men will switch focus to commencing their La Liga campaign at Osasuna in 12 days’ time.

Former Spain and Real Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui has helped Sevilla challenge for major honours.

It promises to be an intriguing final act of pre-season for City, who themselves start off in the Premier League next Sunday against Brentford (2pm BST kick-off). Speaking before the clash, for which tickets are still available, manager Brendan Rodgers spoke with excitement this week.

"They’re an excellent side with sustained success both in La Liga and in European competition, so it will provide just the kind of test," he said.

"We’ve got a lot of hard work to do during the week and it’ll be nice to be at home again. We obviously haven’t been there for a couple of months, so it’ll be really good to get back there. I’m really pleased with how it’s all going and we’ll plan for that during the week."
