Mendy & Senegal Beaten By The Netherlands

Leicester City midfielder Papy Mendy made his FIFA World Cup debut on Monday as Senegal were beaten 2-0 by the Netherlands in Qatar.

City's No.24, a CAF Africa Cup of Nations champion, started for the Lions of Teranga as they were beaten in their Group A opener after goals from Cody Gakpo and Davy Klaassen. City's first star to feature at the tournament, Mendy also became the 17th player in the Club's history to play at a World Cup.

That list includes Willie Cunningham (Northern Ireland, 1958), Gordon Banks (England, 1966), John O'Neill (Northern Ireland, 1982, 1986), Kasey Keller (United States, 1998), Muzzy Izzet (Turkey, 2002) and Riyad Mahrez (Algeria, 2014), who all starred before the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Four years ago, there was action for Kasper Schmeichel (Denmark), Harry Maguire (England), Jamie Vardy (England), Shinji Okazaki (Japan), Wilfred Ndidi (Nigeria), Kelechi Iheanacho (Nigeria), Ahmed Musa (Nigeria), Adrien Silva (Portugal), Ricardo Pereira (Portugal) and Yohan Benalouane (Tunisia).

Monday's outing was Papy Mendy's 20th cap for Senegal.

Earlier in the day, James Maddison did not feature for England due to a slight knee injury as the Three Lions ran out as 6-2 victors over Iran in Group B. Another chance to make his major tournament debut could come as Gareth Southgate's men tackle the United States on Friday (7pm kick-off). 

Goalkeeper Danny Ward, on the other hand, was unused on the bench for Wales as they drew 1-1 with the USA on Monday evening. Belgium's Youri Tielemans, Wout Faes and Timothy Castagne, plus Ghana defender Daniel Amartey could also appear later this week in Qatar.
