Full-time celebrations

City's World Cup In Qatar

Five Leicester City stars represented their countries at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in winter 2022.

City's representation at the 22nd instalment of the World Cup began on 21 November as Papy Mendy - an Africa Cup of Nations champion - started for Senegal, who were beaten 2-0 by the Netherlands.

The Foxes action continued two days later with both Timothy Castagne and Youri Tielemans starting for Belgium in a 1-0 win over Canada, in what would be their only win of the winter contest. Wout Faes - as was the case for the whole tournament - was an unused substitute.

Daniel Amartey was next up - playing from start to finish in a five-goal thriller between Ghana and Portugal, although the Black Stars suffered a 3-2 reverse. Mendy's second World Cup appearance, on the other hand, was a happier affair as Senegal defeated hosts Qatar 3-1 in Group A.

Goalkeeper Danny Ward was also called into action for Wales late on in their 2-0 loss to Iran, before Belgium's shock 2-0 reverse against Morocco. Tielemans came off the bench in that game, while Castagne started, meaning the Red Devils' chances of qualifying from Group F hung in the balance.

Amartey and Ghana's hopes, though, were renewed by a 3-2 triumph over South Korea a day later, before Senegal - with Mendy as a late sub - also overcame Ecuador 2-1 to set up a knockout clash with England, who had beaten Ward's Wales 3-0 in their final group fixture. Cymru finished bottom of Group B.

A 0-0 draw for Belgium left them third in Group F, while Ghana, who later lost 2-0 to Uruguay, ended up fourth in Group H. A potential LCFC head-to-head in the last-16 didn't happen in the end, as James Maddison remained on the bench, with England meeting Mendy's Senegal.

It was the Three Lions who emerged as 3-0 victors - teeing them up with world champions France in the quarter-finals. The French, though, would win that clash, eventually losing the final to Argentina.
