Pupils Get Into Sport Through Leadership Programme

Stokes Wood Primary School pupils have completed an eight-week leadership course that has changed their perceptions of getting involved in sports.

- Stokes Wood is a Premier League Primary Stars partner school
- Leicester City in the Community coaches have been working with pupils to engage them in PE
- Pupils on the course have been supporting and delivering their own sports sessions during lunchtime
- Since beginning the course, the young people have increased their engagement in after-school sports

Stokes Wood Primary School pupils have increased their sports engagement this academic year through a sports leadership programme delivered by the Club’s charitable arm.

Funded by the Premier League Charitable Fund (PLCF), the Premier League Primary Stars programme enables young pupils to take part in and enjoy increased levels of sport and physical activity.

One way in which Leicester City in the Community have approached this is by selecting pupils who have not taken park in extra-curricular school sport or PE and helping them become sports leaders.

The programme encourages pupils to become more active in sport.

One Year 6 pupil, Salma, has taken part throughout the eight weeks, and has had a complete change of mindset regarding sport participation.

“I wasn’t truly into sports,” Salma admits. “I stayed on my own, but now I am playing football for the school team.

“I felt at first that sport was just tiring, but actually it is fun.

“The sessions are very interesting, and you could say I have engaged in more physical education than ever!”

The eight-week programme saw the selected 10 children work in the classroom to work out ways of engaging with their peers and how they can enjoy sports through delivering activities.

Pupil Salma has reinvented her belief of sport due to the effect of the programme.

Leicester City in the Community Primary Stars Coach, Andrew Turney, delivered the intervention, and he highlighted how Salma has benefitted through it.

“Salma rarely joined in sports sessions, whether it would be PE or on the playground," Turney explained.

“Since bringing her into the programme and pairing her up with someone to deliver, she’s engaged with lunchtime football and joining in PE a bit more.
