After four games against international opponents, the young Foxes featured in their final Group A match, as late drama in Seagrave left the scores level against Celtic.

Tsoanelo Letsosa scored twice before Paul Appiah and Kian Pennant levelled things out, in the dying stages of the match.

Despite a point not being enough for City to progress through to the knockout stages of the tournament, coach Petty was delighted with the side’s efforts.

I think for the players it’s invaluable experience. It puts you up against different styles and cultures, and I think it’s been the highlight of the programme.

“I was proud of the team’s determination tonight,” Petty told LCFC TV. “It was a great game of football. Of course, the draw isn’t good enough for either side, but I’m delighted with the effort of the players, and on another night, we should’ve had two or three more goals.

“We created more chances tonight than we did in the last month, but we’ve got to be more clinical, and that is those marginal gains that make a difference.

“Players have got to be better in front of goal, but credit to them, they created lots of opportunities against a good Celtic team.”

On a night filled with rued opportunities, the coach explained how they missed the chance of three points but was able to draw positives from the night, as the Foxes prepare for a Premier League 2 Division 1 match at Brighton & Hove Albion on Monday (3pm GMT kick-off).

Paul Appiah scored the first Leicester goal against Celtic in Seagrave.

“All you can ask for is for the strikers to be in those sorts of positions to miss those chances,” Petty continued. “They’ll be kicking their heels that they’re not on the scoresheet, and we had one or two that we thought were clear cut, but overall I'm delighted with the effort; especially after going 2-0 down.

“I think the International Cup this year has been outstanding. The Wolfsburg game early in the season was a good game, and I think for the players it’s invaluable experience. It puts you up against different styles and cultures, and I think it’s been the highlight of the programme.

“We’re building in terms of the level of our performances in the last few weeks. Brighton will be a tough game on Monday, but we’ve got to get the lads back on the training ground and recovered well to make sure we get our game plan right.”
