Craig Shakespeare has revealed that Wes Morgan is “touch and go” to be fit for Leicester City’s Premier League fixture at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday afternoon (3pm kick-off).

The City captain is recovering from a hamstring problem and was substituted during the UEFA Champions League Quarter-Final second leg defeat by Atlético Madrid 10 days ago. He has been monitored at Belvoir Drive over the past week and is in contention to appear in the West Midlands.

Before missing the trip to West Ham United last month, a 3-2 success for the Foxes, Morgan had enjoyed a massive 88-game run of consecutive starts in the Premier League. He was absent again for the 1-0 reverse at Arsenal on Wednesday night but Shakespeare says he is making good progress.

“He’ll be touch and go,” the City boss told the national media on Friday morning. “He has trained outside but not fully with the squad yet. I’m hoping, if he trains today, he’ll be in with a late shout tomorrow. I won’t put him at risk but, knowing his character, he’ll want to play when he’s 100 per cent.

“He’ll be given every opportunity to prove his fitness and we’ll have a chat nearer the time.”

Shakespeare also provided an update on Islam Slimani. The Algeria international has been recovering from a groin strain this week and may also be in with a chance of returning at the Hawthorns. Slimani, 28, scored against the Baggies during a 2-1 defeat at King Power Stadium earlier in the season.

“Slimani trained yesterday,” the City boss added. “If there is no adverse reaction, I think he may be ready to train with the group today. We’ll assess him after training.”
