Leicester City 2 Sunderland 0

In-Form Foxes Defeat Sunderland

Leicester City extended their winning run to six games in all competitions with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Sunderland at King Power Stadium on Tuesday.

It proved to be a tense first period on Filbert Way, with Shinji Okazaki, Demarai Gray and Jermain Defoe all coming close to breaking the deadlock.

The game turned in City’s favour after the hour mark though and it was the introduction of Marc Albrighton and Slimani that proved pivotal.

Albrighton’s pin-point cross into the box found the Algerian frontman, who outmuscled Lamine Kone and got up well to nod home past Jordan Pickford.

Sunderland responded well and came just inches away from an equaliser when Victor Anichebe’s effort deflected off Robert Huth and onto the post.

The rebound fell to Defoe, who hammered into the side-netting. After riding their luck, the Foxes doubled their advantage through Vardy.

Albrighton was again the provider, as he delivered into City’s No.9, who took a touch before rifling a half-volley into the top corner to seal the points for his side.

Major moment

Sunderland were impressive going forward on occasions and were incredibly unlucky not to draw level when Victor Anichebe saw his shot deflect onto the post.

With the Black Cats in the hunt for an equaliser, it was just as well that Jamie Vardy fired home to put the game beyond David Moyes’ men – the striker’s fifth goal in his last five Premier League appearances.

Who impressed?

After missing out on the 2-0 win over Stoke City, Marc Albrighton looked back to his best during a 29-minute cameo against Sunderland.

Where do we stand?

A fifth-consecutive Premier League victory means the English champions move up to 10th in the table and now sit a massive nine points above the drop zone.

Coming up…

Following back-to-back home victories, Leicester City next head to Goodison Park to face Everton on Sunday 9 April (4pm kick-off), before taking on Atlético Madrid in the UEFA Champions League Quarter-Finals three days later.
