My Season Highlight: Ben Chilwell

Ben Chilwell is the latest Leicester City player to tell LCFC TV his highlight of the 2016/17 season - the UEFA Champions League Quarter-Final clash with Atlético Madrid.
More on this story...

While the Foxes ultimately bowed out of European football's premier club competition with a 2-1 aggregate defeat, it was a landmark occasion for 20-year-old full back Chilwell, who made his mark on the Filbert Way crowd that night.

England striker Jamie Vardy struck in the second half following Saúl Ñíguez's opener on Tuesday 18 April at Leicester City Stadium, but Antoine Griezmann's strike from the penalty spot in the first leg proved decisive as Atléti progressed to the last four.

Chilwell's highlight:

"It was probably coming on at half-time against Atlético Madrid. There was so much riding on that match. For all the players and all the fans, it was such a big occasion," the City left back said.

My Season Highlight: Ben Chilwell

Ben Chilwell discusses his season highlight, which included a memorable maiden UEFA Champions League campaign.

"We were so hyped for it so to come on and do well myself was great. Obviously we didn’t go through, but it was a good result and a good performance so that is definitely my highlight of the season."

Match round-up:

A 1-1 draw with Atlético Madrid at Leicester City Stadium was not enough for the Foxes to advance to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League, as they bowed out of the competition with a 2-1 aggregate defeat.

Already a goal down after last week’s first leg in the Spanish capital, Leicester City’s task of was made even more difficult on 26 minutes when Saul Niguez headed home a Felipe Luis cross to open the scoring on Filbert Way.

A Sea of Blue & Gold: Atletico Madrid, Quarter-Finals

An electric atmosphere at Leicester City Stadium set the tone for a night of drama.

That prompted Craig Shakespeare, who welcomed back skipper Wes Morgan to the starting XI, to introduce Leonardo Ulloa and Ben Chilwell after the break and switch his side’s set up to a 3-5-2 formation.

It worked, as Chilwell’s deflected effort fell to Jamie Vardy, who side-footed in from close range to level the scores just after the hour mark – the comeback looked on.

City piled on the pressure and were without doubt the better team on the night going forward. But for all their domination, they couldn’t breach the defiant Atléti back line for a second or third time in the game.

Ben Chilwell went so close to scoring against Atleti with this volley in the second half.

It was substitute Ulloa who first came close to netting his side’s second, as the ball dropped to the Argentine frontman at the back post. He met it well with his left foot, only to see his strike cleared off the line.

Vardy found himself in a similar position just a minute later but it was Stefan Savic who this time got in the way of the effort – the England international unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet for a second time on the night.

An intelligent flick from Vardy forced Jan Oblak into a stop with 18 minutes to play and Riyad Mahrez’s 25-yard free kick flew just over shortly after, before Marc Albrighton was unfortunate not to find the back of the net in injury time.

That proved to be the final action of a 2016/17 Champions League that will live long in the memory of everyone involved with Leicester City Football Club.
