Young Leicester City defender Darnell Johnson has been called up for the England Under-19s squad ahead of next month’s UEFA Euro U19 Championships in Georgia.

The 18-year-old centre back, who can also play at right back, was an invaluable figure as the Club lifted their second HKFC Citi Soccer Sevens Main Cup crown in Hong Kong this year following a hugely impressive campaign with the Development Squad in Premier League 2 Division 1.

Johnson has previously represented his country at both Under-16 and Under-17 level and will travel out with Keith Downing’s young Lions early next month. The powerful defender, godson of former City striker Emile Heskey, is just the latest youthful Foxes star to make the grade at international level.

Team Mates: Darnell Johnson

Darnell Johnson gives LCFC TV the low-down on his fellow team mates.

Harvey Barnes, 19, was integral for the Under-20s, who won the Toulon Tournament in June, while Ben Chilwell and Demarai Gray continue to impress for the Under-21s at the UEFA Euro U21 Championship in Poland. Aidy Boothroyd’s men face a semi-final tie with Germany on Tuesday 27 June (5pm kick-off).

Johnson, meanwhile, is one of five defenders picked by Downing, whose side kick-off their Group B schedule against Bulgaria on Monday 3 July in Tbilisi. The English youngsters will then meet the Netherlands – who conceded just one goal in six qualification matches – on Thursday 6 July.

The group stage concludes against Germany on Sunday 9 July with the top two teams from each group progressing to the semi-final stage. It is a competition which offers Johnson and his team-mates the opportunity to continue a golden summer of success for England at youth level.

You can follow Johnson's progress on LCFC.com throughout the summer.
