Drinkwater Excited By Foxes Progress

After the season he has just had, Danny Drinkwater discussing the long-term ambitions of Leicester City Football Club will be music to the ears of the Blue Army.
A stellar performer in Nigel Pearson’s promotion-winning side, the Foxes’ 2013/14 Player of the Year signed a new four-year contract with the Club this week.

And the 24-year-old playmaker says the progressive approach the Club is planning to its return to the Premier League after a 10-year absence was a key factor in him committing his extremely promising future to the City cause.

“It’s a Club moving forward and I wanted to reflect that in the length of time I’m going to be here,” Danny told Foxes Player.

“The Club has made it clear to all of us that we’re aiming to establish ourselves in the Premier League and ultimately aim for the higher reaches of it, so I’m delighted I’ll have a chance to be part of that.

“You want to be playing for a Club with ambition and a Club moving forward.”

A January signing from Manchester United in 2012, Drinkwater’s reputation has been on an upward curve during his two-and-a-half-year spell with City, culminating in a title-winning campaign last term where he truly came to the fore.

A mainstay in Pearson’s side and a major midfield artery through which so much good team work flowed, he played nearly 50 games and finished third in the voting for the Football League’s Championship Player of the Year – a poll cast between all 24 Championship managers.

Drinkwater cannot put his finger on what clicked for him during 2013/14 – arguably the most productive of his career to date – but is hopeful of maintaining that form in the top flight.

“I just got my head down and made sure I was working hard in training every day, doing the right things and trying to help others around me,” he said.

“I think that’s shown in my performances and I’m really glad that’s been the case. But it’s important I keep working hard and keep improving to stay at that level next season.”
