Moore: We Can Compete

Academy graduate Liam Moore is confident that Leicester City can cause a few upsets in the Barclays Premier League next season on the back of an unbeaten pre-season programme.
The Foxes concluded their pre-season preparations with a 1-0 win over Werder Bremen on Saturday afternoon – their sixth success from seven warm-up matches – and with the momentum on their side, Moore sees no reason why they can’t start strongly.

Everton are their opening day opponents at King Power Stadium, but further games against Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United are really set to test their top-flight credentials during a whirlwind start to the new campaign.

And Moore, who is a boyhood Leicester City, admits he can feel the anticipation building. He told Foxes Player: “I see all the excitement around the city and I’m very excited too. But for me, I’ve got to remember that I’m not a fan when I go onto the pitch, I’m a player and I can’t get drawn into the situation.

“We can spring a big surprise next season. I think we might get underestimated a few times when some of the big boys come here. We showed that we can compete in the cup last season [against Fulham and Manchester City] and I’m sure we’re going to do that in the Premier League. There will be a few surprises along the way.

“We’re going to be very positive and we’ve spoken about giving other teams something to worry about rather than thinking of the big names some teams have in their squads. It’s important that we put our stamp on things.”

This season marks Moore’s first in the top-flight, and rather than setting individual goals, he’s putting all his energy into learning from some of his more experienced team-mates and establishing himself in the side.

He added: “I’m learning a lot every single day, and I’ll learn a lot of lessons in the Premier League, I know that. I’ve picked up a few pointers along the way in pre-season, especially against the bigger teams – Werder Bremen and Everton a couple of weeks ago. But it’s all about me learning and improving as a player.

“There are some players in this team that have played at the very top level. Matt Upson has played for England, has bags of experience and I’m only going to learn from people like that.

“The new players have gelled very well. They’ve fitted right in and have all got a good work ethic. They’ve all put themselves right in the mix for the start of the season.

“I’d like to get on the scoresheet more, but my first and foremost goal is to break into this team. Competition for places is very, very high. I need to be in the team before I can start thinking about scoring more, so that’s my first goal.”
