Schwarzer: We Can’t Give Up

Experienced Leicester City shot stopper Mark Schwarzer insists the team are very much up for the fight as they battle to avoid relegation from the Barclays Premier League.
Defeat to Manchester City last Wednesday night left the Foxes seven points adrift of safety – adding even more significance to next weekend’s King Power Stadium clash with relegation rivals Hull City.

At win against the Tigers is of the utmost importance if City’s bid for survival is to gain momentum, and the Australian goalkeeper says there is no hint of heads dropping in the Foxes camp.

“We can’t give up and we can’t get down on ourselves.” Schwarzer told Foxes Player. “We’ve come to the Etihad and we’ve really pushed Manchester City all the way.

“We’ve got to go into every game that remains in the season with the sort of self belief that we’ve shown against Manchester City and Arsenal. If we do that then we’ll give ourselves a very good chance.

“Obviously you’re just trying to do your job as best you can. At the end of the day we lost the game, that’s the bottom line.

“We’ve got to look at the way we performed, at the mistakes that we made, and collectively as a team, try to improve on those things and say effectively that our season starts on Saturday.”

In many ways the Foxes impressed against the Premier League champions despite the 2-0 defeat. They were highly disciplined, pushed their opponents all the way and on another night could certainly have come away with a result.

He added: “That’s been pretty prominent (disciplined performances), certainly since I’ve been at the Club, that we’ve been in every single game.

“We’ve always pushed the opposition to the limits. Against Manchester City for 89 minutes I think we were involved heavily in the game. We hit the post in the second half and there were possibly a couple of penalty claims that didn’t go our way.

“It’s tough when you’re at the bottom fighting for your lives. The positives are that you come away from the Etihad with a good performance and one that you can build on. Now we have to start making sure that we turn good performances into results.

“We’re aware of the upcoming games, and we’re aware that they’re big games. Every game we have to go into it with the belief that we can win it and the expectation that we can win it.”
