Captain Wes Morgan says Leicester City had to dig deep and show their mettle during the 1-0 UEFA Champions League win over FC Porto.

The Foxes made it two victories from two games in Group G on Tuesday evening thanks to Islam Slimani’s first-half header at Leicester City Stadium.

Spurred on by the vociferous Blue Army, Morgan and his men defended brilliantly in the second half to halt Porto’s forward line, earning a memorable victory on their home Champions League debut in turn.

“It was a fantastic night for everyone involved with Leicester City,” Morgan told LCFC TV after the game. “The fans were amazing tonight. You could really feel the energy from the crowd and that translated into the team.

“We worked really hard and it wasn’t an easy game but we came out victorious and that’s the main thing.

“When you face a side like Porto, they’re very experienced and organised. We knew it wasn’t going to be easy. We had to weather the storm, especially in the second half.

“They really came out at us and we had to dig deep. I think that just shows our character that we saw the game out and kept a clean sheet.”

Summer signing Slimani has made an immediate impact at the Club, scoring three times in four appearances since joining from Sporting Lisbon, and Morgan has been suitably impressed with the Algeria international’s efforts so far.

Morgan said of Slimani: “He’s a presence up there and works hard. He can hold the ball up and win balls in the air. He’s very good with his head and that’s shown with the three goals he’s scored so far.

“He’s definitely an asset to the team and if he keeps putting in performances like that, everyone will be happy.

“He works hard and he’s always in your face. He causes defenders trouble and makes them think, so he’s a nightmare to defend against.”
