Under-21s: Derby 3 City 2

City’s Under-21s lost out to the odd goal in five at Derby County on Monday afternoon, suffering their first defeat in the Professional Development League campaign.

Having come from two goals down to grab a point in their opening game at Wigan last week, the Foxes again had to come from behind at Pride Park when Valentin Gjokal put an experienced Rams side into a first-half lead.

Two goals from second-year scholar Michael Cain turned the game in City’s favour early in the second period, as a Foxes side made up almost entirely of young professionals came back strongly after the break.

But Conor Doyle levelled for Derby from Theo Robinson’s pass, before Ben Davies hit the Rams’ winner seven minutes from time.

George Taft, Cian Bolger, Tom Kennedy, Tom Hopper and Harry Panayiotou were among the names on City’s team sheet, as the Club’s young prospects again seized the chance of some competitive match time in the newly-formed Development League.

City’s Under-21s will play their first home game of the campaign next Monday when they host Crewe Alexandra.
