Recent Goals Delight De Laet

Ritchie De Laet says he has enjoyed the attacking freedom City’s recent form has afforded him, but vows never to neglect his defensive responsibilities.

The Belgian right-back has seen his adventurous raids into opposition territory rewarded with two goals in the last week – his first for the Club in the 6-1 win over Huddersfield and another in Saturday’s FA Cup win over Burton.

The summer signing from Manchester United has never been shy to get forward, in keeping with the make-up of the modern full-back.

And he says the way City have been dominating games, particularly at home, has been the secret behind his recent contributions to the goal tally.

“If I keep getting into those positions then goals will come,” said De Laet.

“That’s two in two now for me so I have to keep working hard to get into those positions.

“It’s just my game, I like to get forward. If it gets me into those positions and the ball breaks for me then I’ve got a chance to score, but I’m a defender first and foremost and I try to do my defensive job first.

“We controlled the game with our possession, which gives me and Konch (Paul Konchesky) the chance to get forward and support the attacks, which is what the gaffer wants us to do.”

Saturday’s win over Burton saw City avoid a banana skin they have already skidded on once this season, having been knocked out of the League Cup by the Brewers back in August.

After five years playing in England, De Laet, 24, is familiar with the unique nature of the FA Cup and was pleased to see the Foxes negotiate their third round tie professionally.

“We needed to be professional, which is exactly what we were. We had most of the possession, didn’t give too much away and kept another clean sheet,” he said.

“It means everything as a foreigner. I’ve been in England for five years now so I know all about the FA Cup and the giant killing that goes on.

“We don’t want that to happen to us so we have to be professional in every game we play.”
