Under-21s Lose To Terriers

Leicester City’s Under-21 Development Squad were handed a shock 3-0 defeat at home to Huddersfield Town on Saturday despite a typically imposing display from Steve Beaglehole’s table-topping side.

It was just the third time City’s youngsters have tasted defeat all season, and the first time they have failed to score – bringing to an end unbeaten run stretching back to October 2012.

The Terriers trio of Jordan Sinnott, Tom Smith and Max Leonard were all on the scoresheet for Steve Eyre’s Huddersfield as they claimed the surprise victory.

Sinnott and Smith both made the most of defensive errors to give Town a 2-0 lead going into the break as The Foxes were guilty of some wasteful finishing against their Yorkshire opposition.

After the break City poured forward, but after being unable to claw a goal back were hit on the counter near the end when Leonard put the result beyond doubt with a third.

Development Squad Manager Beaglehole told afterwards: “You get games from time to time, which are freak results, and this was a freak result, there’s no doubt about that.

“In the first 20 minutes we played as well as we’ve done all season. We started the game exactly like we did against Coventry where we were very dominant.

“We were getting corners and free kicks and we missed several chances to score two or three goals never mind one. We didn’t do that which in previous games we have.

“You never like to get beat, but it was just one of those days. Even after we were 3-0 down Tom Hopper and Harry Panayiotou had chances, but it was one of those games I thought that we could have played all the way into Sunday and we still wouldn’t have scored.

“The lads have been on a great run, so credit to them, and it was probably as young as we’ve ever been on Saturday – six second year scholars started the game, although Nicky Eaden was on the bench.

“He’s 40 like Ryan Giggs, and Ryan is still playing in the Premier League so I’d expect Nicky to be able to play an Under-21s game!”
