Maguire Hails ‘Important’ Win

Harry Maguire says it was vital for Leicester City to get their first 2017/18 victory on the board following Saturday’s 2-0 triumph over Brighton & Hove Albion.

Shinji Okazaki’s first-minute strike and Maguire’s header after the break saw the Foxes build on last week’s performance at Arsenal with a fine win on Filbert Way.

Craig Shakespeare’s men were dominant from the off and only Tomer Hemed’s late effort tested Kasper Schmeichel at the other end.

A delighted Maguire told LCFC TV: “After the defeat last weekend, we knew it was going to be difficult and we came under pressure at times, but with the early goal, it settled the nerves and we were able to play some good football.

“Maybe in the first half we should have killed the game off and scored two or three goals, but that’ll come as we become more clinical.

If you look at last weekend, we scored another two from set pieces and we’ve been causing problems from them. If the delivery stays as it is, we know it’s going to be tough for the opposition to defend against.

“We came out in the second half and started solid and obviously I managed to get a goal to give us that little cushion. From then on, I don’t think we ever looked like we’d lose the game.

“It was an important victory today and we know the two games after it will always be tough. Like you saw last weekend at Arsenal, we can go toe-to-toe with the big teams.

“We take confidence from that game as well as this game and we’ll go to Manchester United with a positive attitude.”

Maguire was pleased to get his first goal in Leicester colours, but knows that if the delivery from set plays continues to hit the standards it already has this season, he may be in for more success in front of goal.

Elated Maguire Praises City Performance

Harry Maguire lauded Leicester City for their confident display against Brighton.

Discussing his goalscoring, he said: “It’s something that as a centre half, especially my size, I should be chipping in at the other end of the pitch, as well as keeping clean sheets.

“Certainly this season, I’ll set myself a target every six months and I should be aiming to hit it. During my career, I’ve managed to score goals so long may it continue.

“If you look at last weekend, we scored another two from set pieces and we’ve been causing problems from them. If the delivery stays as it is, we know it’s going to be tough for the opposition to defend against.”

The former Sheffield United man joined from Hull City in the summer and says he is reaping the rewards of spending time with his team-mates both on and off the pitch in pre-season.

All 13 of Harry Maguire's England caps have come during his period as a Leicester City star.

He added: “As soon as you move clubs, you’ve always got to build relationships, especially as a defender. You’ve got to know each other’s attributes.

“The more you play with each other, the better you’ll become. The deal here got done nice and early so I was able to play all the games in pre-season and I got to know the lads.

“With the first two games, it could have gone better last weekend but it was a positive performance. Today was a much more solid performance and a thoroughly deserved win.”
