Earlier in the day, Amartey played the full 90 minutes as Ghana ran out as comfortable 5-1 victors over Congo in African Group E. They are now within two points of Uganda in second.

Richmond Boakye's double was added to by a Thomas Partey hat-trick in Brazzaville to give the Black Stars renewed hope of being able to reach next summer’s World Cup in Russia.

Gray, meanwhile, scored a spectacular goal as England’s Under-21s booked a 3-0 UEFA EURO U21 qualifying success against Latvia at Vitality Stadium.

After just 13 minutes on the south coast, the skillful Foxes winger cut inside his man and curled it into the far corner before Tammy Abraham and Kasey Palmer also scored later on.

City team-mate Ben Chilwell, on the other hand, was an unused substitute for Aidy Boothroyd's men.

Elsewhere, new loan signing Aleksandar Dragović was among the starters for Austria in a 1-1 draw with Georgia. As a result, they are now five points adrift of second place Wales.

In Constantine, Riyad Mahrez and Islam Slimani, a 73rd minute sub, were unable to prevent Algeria from suffering a 1-0 loss to Zambia, with Patson Daka's solitary strike sealing matters.

However, it was a more profitable evening for the representatives of the Club's Development Squad with goalkeeper Daniel Iversen appearing for Denmark U21s in a 6-0 rout of Lithuania.

Midfielder George Thomas followed up his goal-scoring display for Wales U20s at the weekend with another impressive outing in a 2-0 win over Portugal.
